When we do something we think before taking an action, we take ideas and turn it into reality, and inside our heads there are many key components that shape who we are as people. The three most important tools in our minds are; beliefs, emotions and reasoning. These three tools operate in our minds in various different ways. “Reasons are the pillars of the mind,” (Edward Counsel). This quote is very bold in many ways, because without reasoning a person will do things without thinking the outcome. It is a main base for someone to think. Without reasoning people wouldn’t have beliefs, faith or hope. Firstly, Pi is able to survive 227 days adrift with a Royal Bengal Tiger, and a boat with limited supplies, but has to think critically with reasoning. Second, Pi will be tested these 227 days to find his true identity and in order to do that he needs an extreme amount of bravery. Finally, with the help of reasoning Pi is able to make decisions with confidence and figure out the limitation of this journey. Therefore, these three components will aid Pi along the way to survive 227 days adrift at seas.Firstly, the importance of reasoning is far more complex than what people think, reasoning can help people to think about the outcome before making a decision. Most importantly the situation Pi is put into correct decision making and judgement is very important. This is clearly visible in the novel; Life of Pi. Throughout this entire time adrift he felt that Richard Parker is a very dangerous animal who just tried to harm him. When Pi first realizes that there was a tiger on the boat, he said: “There was a tiger in the lifeboat. I could hardly believe it, yet I knew I had to, and I had to save myself,”(Martel 195). Due to him being afraid of the tiger Pi builds a raft by using the life jackets in the boat and the ropes from the locker. The raft floats at a safe distance from the lifeboat so he doesn’t have to deal with the tiger. This boldly demonstrates that critical thinking and reasoning was used when Pi took this decision, he was able to think before his action which is why it worked out. The reasoning behind this choice would be the fact that he wanted to create a safe distance from the tiger for his personal safety. “I had fled the lifeboat to save my life,”(206). The reason behind this was personal safety, Pi knew that if he had stayed at that same boat with the tiger it can kill him. However, when they arrive at a algae island, Pi is extremely excited when he finds land when he said: “Richard Parker! Land! Land! We are saved!”(347). When Pi arrives at the island he explores and discovers new things that bring charm to his life, he wants to eat, finally drink fresh water, this can clearly be seen when he said: “I passed the day eating, resting, attempting to stand and, in a general way, bathing in bliss,”(350). This is again, showing us the importance of reason, it is aiding him to critically think about bringing back his health to regular. Therefore, their main reason here is to survive. Thinking before taking an action is the main idea behind this part, this is mainly because rational and logical thinking is the main points to consider when trying to survive. Critical thinking, decision making, and reasoning is why he is able to survive in his situation.Secondly, Pi has been faced with various challenges that tests him and his bravery. His situation is allowing him to find his true identity and to enhance his bravery. In many of these situations Pi was faced with many scary phases which he had to overcome in order to survive. Limitation is also a huge factor in this case, his limitation is aiding him to survive in the critical condition. In many of these scenarios we would be extremely frightened however, Pi was facing death, he had to make choices that required a great amount of bravery. For example, when Pi had found out that there was a tiger living in the lifeboat he risked his life and created a raft which means he has to stay with a bunch of sharks, and be wet all the time, another part that clearly outlined his bravery is when he tries to tame the tiger and claim territory by peeing on the tarp. He also was adrift at sea for 227 days, that alone is an extremely scary thing! Because, he had limited supplies and he did not know how long he would be lost at seas, that alone requires an extreme amount of bravery. When we are faced with little challenges everyday we feel frustrated and worried but if you think about what Pi has faced it is remarkable of how desperate survival can make us. “Bravery is the capacity to perform properly even when your half dead,”(Omar N. Bradley). This quote is saying that when we are faced with various difficult challenges we have to be brave in order to live. That is exactly what Pi did he was half dead but continued to show his bravery and stayed strong along the way. Bravery is one of the key components that helped him survive. Finally, Pi was faced with many, many challenges that required a decision despite his religion or ethnicity. One of the key points was limitation, this is a factor that helps people in life, and in this case helped Pi survive. This can be seen in a negative way or a positive way, however sometimes the negative can be taken in for someone’s advantage. This is mainly shown when people do things they usually don’t, in Pi’s case is to survive. Before the shipwreck Pi is shown to be a vegetarian, he never ate meat and was extremely uncomfortable with killing animals. However, during the process of him trying to survive, Pi went from a vegetarian to eat meat, when he ends up killing the turtle, and eats fish. Also, when he first found the survival supplies in the lifeboat he was extremely hungry so he rapidly opened the cans and drank water and biscuits with animal fat. At the time he was eating the food he said: “pity about the fat, but given the exceptional circumstances the vegetarian part of me would simply pinch its nose and bear it,”(191). This makes Pi finally realize that in order for him to survive he needs to forget his vegetarian background for now and eat what is necessary to survive. This is clearly seen in, “tears flowing down my cheeks, I egged myself on until I heard a cracking sound and I no longer felt any life fighting in my hands,”(245). Previously he thought that killing animals is a horrible thing to do. This is where he realizes his limitations and he has to overthrow his religion(s) in order to survive, “killing it was no problem,”(247) said Pi. He also shows a bold sign of limitation when he cuts the turtles neck and drains the blood into a beaker, “bright red blood shot out. I grabbed the beaker and collected about three hundred milliliters,”(Martel 270). Pi also drank the turtles blood which shows how desperate he is in order to survive. When Pi is eating the turtle he tells us how it was prepared; it can be seen when Pi said: “as confidently as if I had done it before, I jammed the knife just to the right of the turtles head, at an angle. I pushed the blade deep into the skull and twisted it.”(269), this clearly demonstrates that Pi is now killing in order to survive. These limitations and the urge to survive causes Pi to do things he wouldn’t normally do in the past. These situations Pi was faced with, aided him to realize the limitations, which helps him survive. In conclusion, In the human mind we think and do things very specifically, we take ideas and turn it into reality, and inside our heads there are many key components that shape who we are as people. The three most important tools in our minds are; beliefs, emotions and reasoning. Critical thinking and reasoning is what guided Pi along the way to survive 227 days adrift, bravery is what Pi required to have in order to live and confidently survive the journey, and finally, limitations allowed Pi to realise that in order for him to live he has to overthrow his religion and beliefs and focus on survival. These three components allowed us to view this as a learning experience, to see what would happen when we are tested, and would adversity shape our identity? Also till what extent are we willing to sacrifice to survive?
