The Struggle to Find LoveShakespeares play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, follows the main protagonist Hermia an innocent woman who struggles to be with the man she loves. Love is the most important theme in the play because the marriages, the chaotic love.    Anyone should be able to marry who they love. In the play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hermia’s father, Egeus, engaged her with a man named Demetrius. Although having an arranged marriage with Demetrius, she loves another man named Lysander. Hermia loves Lysander and would not be happy marrying a man she does not love. Egeus talks to Demetrius and Lysander “Stand forth Demetrius. My noble lord, this man has my consent to marry her. Stand forth, Lysander. And my bewitch’d the bosom of my child,” (Act 1, Scene 1). In this quote it is stating that Hermia and Lysander are in love but cannot be together because her dad, Egeus has engaged her to Demetrius. Hermia should be able to marry Lysander so she can be happy.    Love is chaotic. In the play there is a big and messy love circle. Egeus is trying to get Hermia to marry Demetrius, but she does not want to which cause her and Lysander to run off into the woods where they thought no one would find them hoping to elope. The love position caused chaos between Hermia and Lysander because he got hit by the love position and fell in love with another girl, Helena. Hermia – “why are you so rude? What change is this, sweet love?” Lysander – “Thy love? Out tawny tartar, out! Out loathed med’cine! O. Hated potion, hence.” (Act 3, Scene 2). Lysander violently falls out of love with Hermia, that love turned into hate. Lysander and Hermia should be able to get married without running away and all the chaos with the potion.    Love is hurtful. In the play Demetrius wants to be with hermia but she does not want to be with him so she ran off with another man. When Lysander was hit with the love potion he fell in love with another girl and when Demetrius was also hit with the love potion he fell in love with the same girl, Helena. Before this Hermia ran away thinking she was going to happily marry Lysander until she was crushed when she found out Lysander loved another girl. Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius and Helena are all together in the woods. “You speak not as you think it cannot be.” (Act 3, Scene 2) In this quote Lysander tells Helena that he loves her and not hermia so hermia says that she’s upset and doesn’t believe that he doesn’t love her anymore.     Love is the most important theme in A Midsummer Night’s Dream because the marriages, the chaotic love circles, and all the backstabbing between the couples in the play. The whole play revolves around love, everything throughout the whole play can be related to love.
