ABSTRACT :

Last
technological developments have had a major impact on the way individuals
interact and react , therefore , they had an important role in the modern life
. Despite the appreciated variety of their benefits  , yet , use of mobile phones can decline the
value of awareness  to real-world
situations (Strayer, Drews, & Johnston, 2003; Strayer & Johnston,
2001).

In this research , former studies were analyzed , and results were
deducted from questionnaires which have been distributed to youth , in order to
determine the level of individuals’ obsession with technology , neglecting the
importance of face-to-face communication. In both, clues have proved that the
increased usage of technology has  negative effects on interactions and
conversation quality.

KEYWORDS:

TOPIC:

The effect of
technology on face to face communication.

NATURE OF THE
PROJECT:

Communication and
entertainment center .

INTRODUCTION:

The variety of
Internet applications and its different functions and means of dealing with
them have become, during the past few years, a tool of attracting many groups
of people of different ages and interests. It has spread  widely,
since it was used in the past by adults, especially researchers
to include a large segment of children, adolescents and young people who found
it enjoyable and highlighted their personalities to achieve many of their
desires.

The cyber life
is becoming more dominant than the concrete life , Therefore , it is no
surprise From 1995 to the present, the number of Internet users in the world
has risen from 16 million to 2280 million as of March of 2012, which is 32.7%
of the world’s total population (Internet World Stats, 2012).

many family
members started to use e-communicating rather than emerging in the real world,
the teenagers are using this type of communication in order to find solutions
for their problems instead of spending time together  .

What draws
attention in today’s relationships among individuals is the use of modern
technology to deliver any message of any kind, so that individuals often do not
communicate directly face to face, instead, they use modern ways of
communication without taking into consideration  any health or psychological consequences on
the individual .

Was this technology
really an effective and honest tool of communication among the society members,
or has it reduced interaction and led to separation of real social relations
and feelings, and increased problems in daily life ?

STATEMENT OF
PURPOSE :

The original purpose of this study was aimed to highlight the negative
effects of the rapid use of the internet applications to the way the world has changed
through technology , and raise the awareness about the importance of
face-to-face communication in the society , especially youth and adults .

PROBLEMATIC :

As recent
technologies emerged into daily routines , the obvious expansion of technology
is negatively decreasing the quality of face-to-face communication . Individuals
are becoming more dependent on communicating with each other through technology
and are abandoning to engage personally, even when actually in the presence of
others. Also the soul of their conversations diminished  in the existence of technology, and many
individuals were bothered when friends or family used technology while spending
time together.

In addition ,
networked technologies are affective in that they allow us to be in a consistent
state of “absent presence,” or the split consciousness created by mobile
technologies such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops with Wi-Fi connectivity
in which one is physically and perceptually present but stuck in a
technologically controlled world of elsewhere (Gergen, 2002; Stone, 2007) .

OBJECTIVES :

In connection to the research topic following objectives are to be
demonstrating by shedding the light about the importance of interpersonal
communication and raising the awareness of the negative effects of the
increased use  of technology in the
society .

VALUE OF RESEARCH :

The importance of my research relied
on social aspect . This technologies formed an atmosphere of separation between people and missed the quality
of their time together. Made people sink in virtual world and communicate less
with those who are in the real world so my project will like kind of therapy
for these problems .

CHAPTER-1-

HISTORICAL
BACKGROUND :

Lifestyle has changed in the last few years
that constant connection has become absolute necessity . Less than two decades
ago, computers were primarily used in science, engineering , and business , and
the Internet was the district for the military. Yet in 2001, 57% of all houses had
a computer, and 51% had direct access to the Internet (National
Telecommunications and Information Administration NTIA, 2002) .

 20 years
ago everything was different , the life was more simple, they were closer
together than people  now and they all
grew up closer together Spending their time without any interruption of
technology.

When the telecommunication  became more popular , neighbors stopped
knocking on each other’s doors . When product and clothes became obtainable online,
people stopped going into markets , losing the connection they had with their
store clerks and neighbors . Everything has become remote as we create a
distance away from the real world and into virtual world . In the last five
years, tens of researchers, journalists,
and authors have reflected on the clues that their own lives show for
reason to be concerned with the way technology is decreasing our social skills.
Email instead of phone calls , texting has replaced email, social media has substituted
“get-togethers,” couples check smartphones at the dinner time rather than
conversing , and friends grouped in the corner texting at parties . Our eyes
and attention are directed towards our cell phones , even when standing face-to-face
having a conversation . (Zaro, 2012; Holm, 2013; Torevell, 2012; Reisman,
2001).

CHAPTER-2-

WHY INDIVIDUALS USE E-DEVICES ?

In our world
today, technology is an essential part of daily life .  From the expansion of the cell phone to how
our society has adapted to new media technologies . And the view of the
internet through our days has changed with the proliferation of technologies
that are able to get over the obstacles of time and space , one would think
that these tools would be used to gain an understanding of other cultures ,
meet people all over the world, maintain and strengthen familial relationships,
communicate effectively with others, and help people to become more socially adept
. However  many people are involved in an
abundant number of relationships through technology. In a study made
by (Kraut, Mukhopadhyay, Szczypula, Kiesler, & Scherlis, 2000) end
results proved that Parents and adolescents used Internet more often to
interact with non–family members than to search for information or
entertainment. since Internet access is provided in houses , family members
spend less time communicating  with each
other.

Obviously, technology has had a deep impact on
what it means to be social. And the increased use of these tools makes
individual  obsessed with technology, not
only to be entertained or interacted , but also to escape from their reality
and collect information about others .

Moreover that
the most prominent  reasons of internet
applications usage are ease of use and flexibility, as well as the nature of
human beings and their desire to form relationships between each other, also
the availability of great leisure time in their life, with limited
opportunities available to them outside, these factors encouraged them to join
the networks .

CHAPTER -3-

THE EFFECTS OF
INCREASED USE OF TECHNOLOGY :

That
sounds like people are becoming more sociable
.is that we spend so much time maintaining superficial connections
online that we aren’t dedicating enough time or effort to cultivating deeper
real-life relationships.

Since the
beginning of time, people have created method to communicate, including primitive
language and markings to more modern technologies .

Since the
primary use of internet is communication , we might think that it will have
positive social impact in people’s everyday lives.

However, some
technological development cause people to be confused , more stressed,  increasingly isolated and caused them to lose
the ability to focus on their demands .

one experiment
has shown that the mere presence of mobile communication technology might
negatively affect  human relationship
formation, in contrast to the next
experiment that has shown meaningful conversation topics
tended to encourage intimacy and trust with the absence of mobile phone (Andrew
K. Przybylski Netta Weinstein – 2012 ) .

Also eye
contact or gesture , non-verbal actions and facial expressions absent while
using technology.

So this effects
cause individuals to act in more selfish ways and perform in a less socially
regulated way than they would face-to-face.

All outcomes give
credibility to the fears that Internet use damages our social interaction among
individuals .

CHAPTER -4-

The Importance
of Face-To-Face Communication in the Digital Age :

Interpersonal Communication is the basic unit
of communication. It may take place among three or more individuals depending
on the circumstances . As a definition the face-to-face
communication is the personal mode of interaction in which the members can
directly respond to signals of the partner. (CAROLIN ARNDT-may 2011) .

Face to face is preferred as it
permits you to read facial expressions, interact with people and test
understanding , participants  not only
hear but also see each other producing sounds as well as facial and more body
gestures. This  contact also facilitates
the transfer of unexpressed  knowledge
(Bower, Hinks, Wright, Hardcastle, & Cuckow, 2001), or knowledge that is
not written or definable, but acquired through experience (Griffith, Sawyer,
& Neale, 2003). It also allows a
person to react to a conversation by using verbal and non-verbal keys they
receive during the conversation.

In a similar vein, Face to face
communication settles in the memory as it enables more easily association with
the personality”. “Key messages are distinct when you are meeting face to face
but they can become lost when communicating online”( Dr Cheryl Travers, DOES
THE FUTURE HAVE ROOM FOR FACE TO FACE COMMUNICATION?). Visual clues and social existence
in face-to-face dialogue also allow members to more easily discover one
another’s background, skills, experiences, and areas of expertise (Rosen,
Furst, & Blackburn, 2007).

Interaction which results from
face to face communication is communication on many levels at the same
time , verbal, physical, contextual, intentional, non-intentional. Such
multidimensional communication is kept by many to be essential to the
transmission of complex, tacit knowledge in a way that phone or email doesn’t allow.

In this regard, face-to-face
communication does not derive its richness and power merely from allowing us to
see each other’s faces and to detect the intended and unintended messages that
can be sent by such visual contact. Face to face communication is a
performance, a means to information production and not merely to more efficient
exchange.

METHODOLOGY :

To design this
research the methodology that I used is based on qualitative approach ,
including recent studies and survey I have done .

The reason
behind using this method because I want to collect information from studies
because the goal of the study was to determine
the relationships between the presence of mobile devices and the quality
of face-to-face social interactions in reality.

CONCLUSION AND
FUTURE RESEARCH :

New media
technologies are having a major impact on the social interaction between
individuals . they use it in many different ways to either communicate or
entertain , but the increased use of previously mentioned media may have
negative effect social relations between individuals.

Therefore , the
awareness of use is the key to reach balance and well-being when using
communications technology

The present research are qualified by a number of limitations that
pave the way  for future research

One of the major
limitations of this study was the lack of time to cover more survey .

Therefore,
Future research may cover  greater
population and explore  behavior directly
to answer the question: do mobile phones change the way people behave toward
one another.
