Bolaji, B.O. & Falade, T.O. recognize
the need of an experimental apparatus for institutions of higher educations to
improve learning experience of students by providing practical demonstrations. With
this apparatus, principles learn in classroom lectures can be simulated or
applied to real-life problems such as the demonstration of a vapour compression
cycle in a refrigeration system which is basically what the researchers did. In
the design process, the first step involves the formulation of the problem
statement followed by evaluating conceptual designs. The effectiveness of the
design as an instructional laboratory apparatus was considered in the criteria
along with the cost, safety, simplicity and size. The components selected were
hermetically sealed compressor, simple capillary tube as expansion device, finned-tube
condenser, and the evaporator with bare plate & inner coil tube for
refrigerant. Dryer-filter and receiver were also added between the condenser
and capillary tube, and a flow meter for the mass flow rate measurement. The
working fluid used is R134a with temperature and pressure measured at four
different points indicated in Figure <__>.

Upon construction, tests were done which shows the sample
results that the apparatus is successfully designed and built for the intention
of demonstrating the said principles. The tests include the computation of the
system’s heat gain & loss, and the performance parameters of the system
such as the coefficient of performance (COP) of the refrigeration cycle and
Carnot cycle, isentropic efficiency, and relative efficiency.
